Fair Skillet Throw Attracts 98 Women

Kathy Peterson of Lynn, MA threw the Fryeburg Fair skillet 57 feet to win the annual Fryeburg Fair Skillet Throw contest that drew 98 competitors.
Heather Brooks of Auburn finished second with a throw of 46.8 feet followed by Shelley Bennett of Parkman at 39.1 feet and Allmuth “Curly” Perzel of Porter at 38.3 feet.
The oldest competitor of the day was Mildred Heath, 98, who hasn’t missed a fair in the past 76 years. Heath of East Conway, NH and a fair trustee always competes first in the popular event.
The Women's Skillet Throw is open to any woman 18 years or older. It was moved from Wednesday to Monday in 2003 and begins at noon in front of the Hog & Goat Grandstand.
Each entrant used to be given one throw with the three pound, 11 ounce skillet provided by the fair. But because of the growth in the event, each contestant only gets one throw. Competitors come throughout the United States including California and Alaska.
